Exxcellent shelves but get the right tools for assembly
I purchased three of these shelves for my garage and assembled them in about two hours total. The metal is finished well (the finish looks like a tough powder coating) and I think they’ll hold plenty of weight once assembled. As other customers have noted, the metal struts are made of thin material and they will bend easily, so a lot of the shelving unit’s final strength comes from the fully assembled structure. The shelving kit includes a toy plastic hammer for assembly. It did nothing, as other reviewers have noted. I think the addition of cotton work gloves to protect your hands was a very thoughtful gesture by the manufacturer. However, I used my own heavy work gloves with a non-slip coating. For proper assembly and maximum strength, I advise using a rubber mallet, which will have the necessary mass to drive the shelving’s metal struts home. I used the mallet by itself to assemble the first of my three shelving units and found that the mallet easily bent the metal struts, so I added a 10-inch piece of 1×3 scrap wood to my assembly toolkit. By positioning the wood on top of the fold where the shelf will eventually sit, I was able to bang on the wood and drive the metal struts home so they full engaged the keyhole slots for maximum assembled strength and did not bend any more metal struts in the process. The wood block spreads the mallet’s impact over the strut’s strongest point (the shelf ledge formed into the strut) and therefore avoids bending the metal. Don’t forget to add the center shelf supports before installing the thin hardboard shelves, again for maximum strength. You need to bend the two metal tabs on the center supports before installing them. The support is made of thin metal, which bends easily with just fingers. Each shelving unit is supplied with two silver locking pins for tying multiple shelving units together. I found these locking pins to be very useful and, again, needed my block of wood to fully drive the locking pins into the keyholes. I also found that the struts on the assembled shelves tended to pop out as I moved the assembled shelves into place and locked them together with the pins, so be sure to check and make sure all of the metal struts are still fully engaged after you get everything set in place. If one strut pin does disengage, It’s a simple matter to pop a strut and bang it back in place. Do all this right and you’ll end up with a fairly strong set of shelves for a very low price. These shelving units cost half of what I paid for four other units I installed in my garage two years ago yet they’re nearly as strong and hold more stuff, although I doubt they’re as study. I don’t store a lot of heavy stuff, but I’ve got a lot of tools and other things to store. One final warning: there are corner brackets that tie each pair of corner struts together to make a full-height unit. I failed to see the word “UP” stamped on the bracket and didn’t assemble the first shelf correctly. Although the shelves will work if these brackets are upside down, if you don’t get it right, you won’t be able to fit the plastic locking pins into place on the brackets. For maximum strength, I had to partially disassemble and reassemble my first shelving unit due to my own lack of attention. The markings are there, but they’re hard to see in a typically lit garage. It cost an extra minute to fix my mistake, so it’s well worth redoing if you make the same misstep. For what they are and what they cost, I think these are excellent shelving units.
Mine not Yours –
Sturdy and Excellent Storage
Bought four sets already and plan to buy eight more (at time of my purchase, a set of 2 was cheapest route).Once assembled, these are very sturdy and very strong. Using mine as room divider between one part of the garage and the workshop part of the garage. They put together in two parts, that then stack if you want them tall like the product image. Before stacking, I leaned on one with all of my weight and it didn’t budge. It is stronger than it seems like it would be considering the cheap materials. The black frame looks nice, and it is very simple to assemble. The shelves are repositionable even after assembly.Since I will be putting reams of paper and heavy paints on some shelves, I have added furring strips beneath those particular shelves since past experience tells me shelves in general tend to appear fine for awhile under heavy weight, then bow. Regardless, these are absolutely excellent.I set mine side by side to separate one part of the garage from another, reserving an L shaped outer part for storage and a work shop but the larger, inner part as a playroom. With these shelving units side by side, I simply attached wall panels to the back side; one day, I will make proper wall dividers with 2x4s and drywall and insulation, but this is perfect for now. For stability from tipping, I attached the top edge of the wall dividers to a furring strip, then used L brackets to attach to the ceiling; I also used the included wall mounts from the shelving units to attach to the garage walls on the one side.If you leave the bottom shelf off and are not worried about potential flooding, you’ll have an extra shelf per unit to use. Since I bought four units, that gives me four shelves. I used a 2x2x2 block of furring strip in each corner of each shelf, screwing the edges of the shelves into it so that so the shelves stay assembled since they otherwise do not connect together without the legs. Then I set up a shelf adjacent to the wall, left a space large enough for a shelf beside it, then set up another shelf. I used my “extra” shelves to screw into the open area between, effectively giving me a third free shelf for storage. All I did was put a section of furring strip at the inner edge of the existing shelf, then screw through my cheater shelf edge, through the existing shelf, and into the furring strip section. Since I am buying even more shelving, I will have one free shelf for every four that I purchase, as long as I set the shelves up in between two existing shelves then screw them together. My set up in the end will be a wall of shelves facing a wall of shelves with a walkway in between. My adjoining L section of the garage faces the garage door that slides open; I am building a plywood counter across this entire space, allowing access space on either side (one side that leads to the other leg of the L with my walls of shelves, and one side leading to the inner portion of the garage). This counter will have deep plywood shelves beneath as well as narrow plywood shelves above. I will buy more of these awesome, versatile shelves to place along the garage door opening itself, but keep them only half height so I have maneuverability with moving wood around above them. I will buy wheels to put them on so they can be moved if desired, and see all I need to do is attach a block of wood to each corner that that the wheels can attach to.As a single mom wanting to use my garage space for storage, a workshop, and a playroom, these shelves are proving absolutely fantastic in helping my garage look nice while giving me a place to put everything. To look even nicer, eventually I will hang up curtain rods and curtains (using shower curtain hooks for easy sliding on the rods) in front of all of the shelves; this will reduce dust that settles within while making the area look nicer, yet still have easy access to everything on the shelves

Saves so much space! Very sturdy
In need of more storage space in basement workshop and bought this after several days of comparing products. It’s among the few more affordable and neat looking ones. The installation is very easy- as an expecting mom I was able to put up both shelves under 2 hours! The frame is metal and the tray is thick cardboard that fits right onto the shelves. You can assemble each shelf in two half height pieces then combine them together. There’s 12 protective pieces in each box (but you only need 4 per large shelf) so that you can actually assemble it to to four half height shelves if needed.
